Open Letter To James Cameron by Lee Stranahan
Dear St Cameron. Here our prayers. Please come down from the mountain (cash) and save the lost tribe (CG Fx Crew) from our torment!

"To James Cameron,

I'm addressing this letter to you because you and your films have been such an inspiration to so many who either watch or work in the movies. I'm asking for your help in addressing a problem that few in your audience have probably ever given a thought to -- the unfair treatment and working conditions of visual effects artists around the world."

Dante's Inferno - Visceral 60 FPS by Gamasutra
Speed, speed!, we need more Speed (and of course, this made life total hell for the dev crew)....... Sorry........

"The leads on Visceral Games' Dante's Inferno had to push their staff to get the game running at 60 frames per second, but they felt it was an essential decision in an action game.

"There was a fair amount of angst over that decision. And there was definitely a strong feeling from myself, and my boss, Nick [Earl], the lead engineer, Brad, and the lead designer, Steve," says Visceral's Jonathan Knight, speaking as part of a new Gamasutra feature interview. "Most of the leads understood why we were doing that... But yeah, we had to evangelize that decision.""

London, Heart Of The Empire in glorious Friese-Green-O-Colour!
This one may be of interest to those of you who were not alive back in 1927. Claude Friese-Green pioneered a colour film making technique, way back when. Check out the video above to see London, just a short span after World War one, and rather spookily, all in colour. The blue's have not fared to well in the colour gamut, still it's fascinating to see London (before Art Deco existed) and in colour.

Enjoy

UVPHactory Created 3D Steroscopic Music Video by cgnews
I'll have to my Green and Red 3D glasses out for this one.......

"UVPHACTORY has designed and directed a brand new, 3D stereoscopic music video, “Drown in the Now.” This video comes on the heels of the worldwide success of Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk’s pioneering, multi-award winning “Wanderlust”, the 3D stereoscopic music video on which the magicians at UVPHACTORY flexed their considerable CG muscles. The 4:30 video was created by UVPH’s new division, UVPH 3D."

Cameron Disappointed At Oscars Animation Characters Not Nominated
Ah, it seems Avatar's producer is not too happy that the animated characters were not given any recognition in the current Oscar run.....

"An article from today’s Hollywood Reporter says that Avatar producer Jon Landau labeled the Oscars “a disappointment” after none of the film’s animated characters were nominated for an acting award. He also said they need to change the term “motion capture photography” to “emotion capture” to fool people into thinking it’s something else.".

Well, you know, it's all down to performance, and if the Academy members don't think the performances are worth of recognition... Anywya, click the link to read more over at Carton Brew.....

Modern Data Storage Super big, but also super fragile?
io9 have a pretty interesting article on just how fragile our modern data storage technologies are.....

if modern civilization collapsed, could the survivors hope to rebuild using our massive stores of data? Unless we can come up with something way more permanent to put them on in the near future, we probably shouldn't bank on it.

A recent article by Tom Simonite and Michael Le Page in New Scientist tackles this question by positing a minor cataclysm: something bad enough to tear apart civilization as we know it, but not quite enough to kill off humans entirely. Candidates include a pandemic, a financial collapse that would make 2008's pale in comparison, a severe natural disaster, or just the slow accumulation of decay in society's foundations.

So, want to keep those photo's around for the year 2500? Better start etching them on holographic glass or sumat. Hit the link to read on....
