Merry Christmas 2009 from CG Academy
Well, another year has passed us by, I hope it has been as good as possible for you and your loved ones. We won't go into to much detail here on the details of the year itself, we'll hold that back for a few days. After all the New Year approaches. All we'll say is, take some time to enjoy the holidays (if you observe them) and to refill those batteries for another year ahead. Christmas is a time for meeting up with family and friends, and being thankful for all that we have. Please pull a cracker for us, sip a drink, nibble a mince pie, and above all, relax and enjoy yourselves. We'll see you again in a few days after some R&R at CGA central. Over and out for now....

Ho Ho Ho Our Best Of The Year! by Ben Simon at Animated Views
Animated Views is taking a look at the best animation of 2009......

"After the excitement of the site’s revamp in the past couple of months, we’re about to take a break for a week or so here at Animated Views, and before we go, it’s that time of year again when we look back over the last year to present our review of 2009. But first, some recent catch-ups to some other great content that you may have missed, starting with a pair of reviews for current family fare:"

Veruska can you see her?
Do you recal our story "Can You See Me? Look Harder...", well, Veruska here was the original inspiration behind that concept it seems. Check out the images, they are once again, very intruiging. Be warned though, in this case the artist has...

A. Tried to become invisible via body paint.
B. Done so in the buff.

So, some nudity will be visible in the images. Hit the link to see more. Or less, as it were... and the link below is for a video featurette on her work..

Avatar Concept Art created by Patton, using ZBrush 2
Here are some of the original Avatar concept art pieces.....

"I started working on Avatar 3 years ago and was working with Zbrush 2 ( that means no subtools!!) I had to work on a fairly slow laptop so that I could work directly with Jim Cameron on the mocap stage. I was really green as a 3D artist but jumped in with both feet, after all this time I still really love the stuff we produced at Stan Winston Studio / Legacy effects.

I was part of the group of artists that Designed the Na'vi characters I was responsible for working out Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) Digital sculpts with expressions as a proof of concept for the look of the Na'vi people. I also did the designs for Norm (Joel Moore) as well as the Grace ( Sigourney Weaver}. We also designed the Viper wolfs from a sketch of Camerons. And fleshed out and detailed the head of the Banshee and figured out how it would function, that was a Neville Page design."

Alma by Rodrigo Blaas, Pixar Animator
Take a break, go home, and make a film. Why not?

"For a limited time during the holidays, Rodrigo Blaas has made his spooky CG short Alma available for viewing online. Blaas is an animator at Pixar who took time off from the studio and returned to his native Spain to make this independent film. His brother, Alfonso Blaas, served as the film’s art director. The film’s official website is www.AlmaShortFilm.com."

A-HAA Podcast Breadcrumbs
If you want to hear some "cartoony" music, this could be just the podcast for you.......

"Yesterday, I had the pleasure of sitting down with my pal Skip Heller to record five segments of "Breadcrumbs" for the upcoming A-HAA Podcast. "Breadcrumbs" will introduce you to great cartoony music of all types. And Skip is the perfect person to share his wealth of knowledge... who else do you know who has done everything from play in a punk rock band to composing music for a symphony orchestra? It's going to be "ear opening" and a lot of fun."

Video Game Nostalgia
Ah, nostalgia eh.... It's not what it used to be.... Anyway, it seems IGN have a little series of articles on gaming through the decades. No doubt inspired by the recent BBC season of technology nostalgia, covering the 70's 80's and 90's. Iif you were there, you have probably forgoten half of it by now. So why not have a read, jog the old grey cells and get misty eye'd at a time when display's could barely handle 4x4 pixels, and that in monochrome...
